The Evolution of the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey: A Closer Look at the New 350

When it comes to cruising yachts, few manufacturers can rival the reputation and scale of Jeanneau. With over 2,500 units of the Sun Odyssey 349 sold during its 12-year production run, the brand has solidified its standing in the sailing community. The Sun Odyssey series has long been synonymous with quality, performance, and comfort, making it a favorite among cruising enthusiasts. In January 2024, Jeanneau unveiled the latest iteration in this esteemed line—the Sun Odyssey 350—at the Düsseldorf Boat Show. This new model promises to build upon the legacy of its predecessor while introducing modern enhancements that cater to the evolving needs of sailors.

A Familiar Yet Fresh Design

Stepping aboard the Sun Odyssey 350 feels like reuniting with an old friend who has undergone a stylish transformation. The most notable change is in the hull shape, which has been redesigned to be more muscular and beamier, with an increase of 15 cm. This fuller bow and wider stern enhance stability and performance, allowing for a more balanced sailing experience. The full-length hull chines contribute to improved form stability, ensuring that the yacht maintains its speed and agility even when heeled.

The deck layout has also seen significant improvements. The hallmark of this eighth generation of Sun Odyssey yachts is the seamless transition from the cockpit to the side decks, thanks to a walk-through design that minimizes the need for awkward stepping over obstacles. This thoughtful design feature enhances safety and accessibility, making it easier for sailors to move about the boat.

Performance Under Sail

The Sun Odyssey 350 is designed for both ease of handling and enjoyable sailing. During a test sail, the boat demonstrated impressive performance in varying wind conditions, ranging from 5 to 20 knots. The twin rudders provided excellent steerage, allowing for smooth maneuvering even in tight marina spaces. The 29hp Yanmar engine delivered ample power, propelling the boat to a cruising speed of 5.8 knots with ease.

Setting sail was a straightforward affair, with all halyards and furling lines leading to the coachroof winches. This design allows for efficient sail handling, making it possible for a small crew to manage the yacht comfortably. The option for a furling main sail adds to the convenience, though many sailors may prefer the Performance pack for a larger, fully battened main that enhances sailing capabilities.

Balanced Handling and Comfort

One of the standout features of the Sun Odyssey 350 is its well-balanced handling. Even when heeled to 20 degrees, the boat tracked steadily, allowing the helmsman to let go of the wheel without losing control. The stainless steel wheels provided a solid feel, although the optional composite wheels could enhance responsiveness. The yacht’s design minimizes the risk of broaching, making it a reliable choice for cruising sailors.

The cockpit is designed with comfort in mind, featuring ample bracing and storage options. The helm seats are positioned for optimal visibility and comfort, allowing the helmsman to enjoy the sailing experience fully. The wide beam and muscular chines contribute to the boat’s ability to maintain speed and stability, even in choppy waters.

Thoughtful Interior Design

Below deck, the Sun Odyssey 350 continues to impress with its spacious and well-lit interior. The companionway features three gently sloping steps that lead down to a bright saloon, creating a welcoming atmosphere. The galley is functional, equipped with a top-opening fridge and a two-burner gas oven, while the layout provides sufficient storage for a boat of this size.

The accommodation is generous, with headroom reaching 190 cm in the forward cabin and 193 cm in the aft cabin. The berths are long enough to accommodate taller sailors comfortably, and the layout maximizes space without compromising on comfort. The attention to detail is evident, with ample storage options and thoughtful design elements that enhance the overall experience aboard.

Specifications and Options

The Sun Odyssey 350 offers a range of keel options, including a standard deep-fin, a shoal-draught wing keel, and a lifting keel that allows for versatility in different sailing conditions. This flexibility is a significant advantage for sailors who wish to explore shallower waters without sacrificing performance.
