Dear Beyoncé: Let Ayo Edebiri Come to Your House

Hey Bey, we thought it might be worth flagging that Ayo Edebiri would be totally chill if she visited your house. Seriously, she’d follow all the rules and be really normal about it even. At Sundance 2025, Ayo Edebiri told Vulture about how she’d act at a pop star’s house when discussing her new movie Opus, in which she plays a reporter who visits an reclusive pop star’s cult home. Is her character, Ariel, drawn into the pop-star glamour? Or does she maintain reservations? “That was kind of the scale we were on every day a little bit,” Edebiri said. “Is she in this allure, fallen into the trap, attracted to it? Always a little bit. Also she’s a journalist, so she’s asking questions. Where is she with this skepticism?” Skepticism sounds nice enough when we’re talking about a fake pop star, but it’s harder to maintain when, say, Queen Bey gets added into the conversation: “If I went to Beyoncé’s house, I’d be like ‘Whatever the rules are in your are the rules,” Edebiri said. “Now I know I’m never gonna get invited to her house.” But we don’t think that’s true! In fact, we think someone who strictly adheres to guidelines is the ideal Beyoncé-home visitor.

But, interestingly, Beyoncé is not the pop star that the cast of Opus would join the cult of. No, that honor belongs to Prince, who, to be fair, does seem like he could run a successful cult. “I would follow his cult,” cast member Juliette Lewis said, adding: “I did.” Edebiri agreed: “The clothes would be fun. Some people, it would be like they look good but everybody else looks dusty as Hell. Prince is like, ‘Everybody looks good!’” It’s a good point. Assless chaps for all!

We’re back at Sundance in the Vulture Spot, where we’re interviewing the casts and creators of the year’s buzziest films. Check out the rest of our coverage from the film fest here.
