After last year’s scheduling confusions and multiple scary fires, awards season is back to its regular programming, with the WGA Awards hosted simultaneously on both coasts on February 15. Writers know best as this is one of the few awards shows this season to give Challengers some credit; writer Justin Kuritzkes is nominated for Best Original Screenplay. Other highlights include multiple nominations for Fallout and Mr. & Mrs. Smith for Best Drama Series, Best New Series, and Episodic Drama; both stream on Prime Video. Several writers will be honored with specialty awards tonight: Scott Frank, creator of The Queen’s Gambit, earns the Ian McLellan Hunter Award for Career Achievement; Bill Lawrence, who most recently created Apple TV’s Shrinking, will accept the Herb Sargent Award for Comedy Excellence; journalist and former Guild president Kathy McGee earns the Richard B. Jablow award; Breaking Bad’s Vince Gilligan will accept the Paddy Chayefsky Laurel Award for Television Writing Achievement. Lastly, the late and great David Lynch will receive the Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement posthumously.
