Yes, Benson Boone Has Had Coffee (Because No, He’s Not Mormon)

Unlike at least one of his Gen-Z pop peers, Benson Boone isn’t into that he espresso — but not for the reason you might think. “ There was a period of time where I really wanted to like coffee,” he admitted in a new Rolling Stone cover. So he started trying it whenever his girlfriend, influencer Maggie Thurmon, ordered a cup. His review? “It literally tastes like burnt wood.” That caffeine consumption wouldn’t have been allowed in the singer’s Mormon upbringing. But, Boone also shared, he doesn’t identify with the faith anymore. “ I don’t want to be a part of one religion,” he explained. “I have my own opinions. Some are from this religion, some are from this religion, some are from no religion.”

This all may come as a surprise from a Brigham Young University dropout who sang about God in his 2024 breakout “Beautiful Things.” Boone told Rolling Stone he’d questioned his faith for years, growing up in the Church of Latter-Day Saints with devout parents. “I was always scared to bring that up to people because I just didn’t want to accept that, like, I wasn’t feeling what everyone else was feeling,” he said. Eventually, he found support in a friend who was also questioning their faith, and now, his beliefs haven’t affected his relationship with his family. “ My parents definitely have their own views, but when it comes to religion and God, they want me to figure it out on my own,” he said.

But anyway: What does Boone drink when he’s workin’ late ’cause he’s a singer? Not dirty sodas. He shared that wild-berry-flavored energy drinks used to get him and his manager through late nights of social-media strategizing. “We’d drink those and think that it would get our brains ready to take over the world,” Boone said. Or at least ready to work late … ’cause he’s a singer.
