A 42-year-old man was behind bars Friday night accused of trying to kill a man in Hialeah who owed him $1,500, police said.

Miami-Dade County Sheriff’s Office correctional deputies booked Jose Perez early Friday morning at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

Detectives identified Perez, also known as Jose Maykel Perez Vila, as the gunman who fired at a man on Thursday night at Wawa, a gas station at West 16 Avenue and 29 Street, records show.

The victim told detectives that he drove away from the gas station and Perez followed him “at a high rate of speed” and ran a red light, according to police.

The victim reported being able to get away from Perez, and later learning from a friend that he had plans “to kill him” for refusing to pay back his $1,500 loan, according to an arrest report.

Hialeah police officers arrested Perez in North Miami Beach. He is facing charges of first-degree attempted murder and shooting a deadly missile. A bond court judge denied him bond.

Detectives asked anyone with information about this or other cases to call Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477 to remain anonymous.
