Rust Has a Trailer and Release Date

Four years after the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, a year after Alec Baldwin’s manslaughter trial ended in dismissal, and a few weeks after the premiere of his TLC reality show, the trailer for Rust has finally dropped. The film premiered at the CamerImage Film Festival in Poland in November of last year. The film is set to premiere in theaters and on-demand in May. Per NBC News, the original producers say they won’t profit from the film. Rather, Hutchins’ husband Matthew will receive profits. This pay scheme was part of the settlement of his wrongful death lawsuit.

In the trailer, we see Alec Baldwin say the word “reckon,” obviously the most cowboy thing one can say. Beyond that, the plot seems obscured. People stare meaningfully at one another. A young boy seems to have some sort of difficult coming-of-age on the ol’ prairie, there are some public hangings. “The only order that exists in this world is the order we impose,” a lawman says — a wild line to open a trailer with for a film so embroiled in litigation. Rust comes to the U.S. May 2.
