If you expected delicate, pretty music from Miley Cyrus’s new album, Something Beautiful, think again. The only thing “pretty” about the title track and its music video is that it’s pretty explosive. “Something Beautiful” starts as as soulful love song with Cyrus crooning in a fluffy, Muppet-esque outfit. Then the twist: “Flash, bang, spark,” Cyrus sings, before a light above the stage explodes and the song turns into an experimental-rock number. By the end of it all, Cyrus is belting, the guitars and saxophone are screeching, and she’s lost whatever that couture piece was. That’s what we call a fake-out.
There’s not much plot to the “Something Beautiful” video either, despite Cyrus teasing the project as a visual album. It’s actually the second taste we’ve gotten of the full movie, after Cyrus dropped a separate “Prelude” video. That one gets even more experimental, flashing between images of flowers and of Cyrus in the same Mugler look she’s wearing on the album cover as she sets the tone with some spoken word. “The beauty one finds alone / Is a prayer that longs to be shared,” Cyrus declares. Yeah, she’s doing much more than just buying herself flowers this time.
