Miley Cyrus is one of the many musical talents bringing their documentaries and narrative films to this year’s Tribeca Festival in New York. Her visual album Something Beautiful, premieres on June 6th at the Beacon Theatre, and a chat with Cyrus follows immediately after the screening; the album comes out on May 30, giving fans plenty of time to get familiar with her new songs before the big night. Musician-led events weave throughout the festival, becoming Tribeca’s biggest line-up of music films, beginning with Billy Joel’s documentary And So It Goes on opening night, June 4. Directed by Susan Lacy and Jessica Levin, Joel’s film shows “rare archival footage” while capturing the “grit, genius, and soul” of his songwriting. As for the rest of the musicians taking over, documentary premieres include Billy Idol Should Be Dead, Depeche Mode: M, Move Ya Body: The Birth of House, Eddie Vedder’s Matter of Time, Metallica Saved My Life, Rebbeca (AKA Becky G), and more.
Even the narrative films in the lineup have some musical connections in their casts: Tow, a film about an unhoused woman fighting to get her car back, stars singers Ariana DeBose and Demi Lovato in supporting roles; A Tree Fell in the Woods has Broadway stars Daveed Diggs, Josh Gad, and Ashley Park. Even if you’re less musically inclined, there’s something for everyone, like the premiere of the live-action How to Train Your Dragon— if you wanted to trade the tunes for Toothless, that is.
