Get Out, Us, Candyman, Nope, Monkey Man… With all of the short titles at Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions, his latest addition almost gives us a full sentence filled with thrills and suspense. Directed by Justin Tipping, Him turns football into a horror show that’s more than just your favorite team losing— one that questions why athletes are worshipped like gods and what it means to be the greatest of all time. The original script, first called GOAT, was on the Blacklist’s Best Unproduced Scripts of 2022. Written by Zack Akers and Skip Bronkie, the script’s recognition caught the eye of Jordan Peele, who helped get the film developed and signed on as a producer. But what do you need to know about the film before game day, besides that you might want to skip out on snacks beforehand?
What’s Him about?
Cameron Cade, an up-and-coming football player, gets invited to an isolated training compound by a “legendary almost retired quarterback” Isaiah White where Cade experiences “blood-chilling journey into the inner sanctum of fame, power and pursuit of excellence at any cost.”
Who’s in the cast?
A real-life young athlete is stepping onto the field as Cade. Tyriq Withers, an actor and former football player for Florida State University, stars alongside comedian Marlon Wayans as White. Joining them in the locker room are Julia Fox, Tim Heidecker, Jim Jefferies, Akeem Hayes, and Tierra Whack.
Where’s the trailer?
The teaser trailer showcases the epic highs and lows of professional football, with a focus on the lows, as all of this looks terrifying. Throughout the trailer, White’s voice booms to Cade, asking, “Do you want this?” as Cade’s training intensifies. Gym sessions trade sweat for blood, screaming fans turn into cult-like worshippers, Jesus Christ becomes… football?
When is the movie out?
Him’s game day debut is on September 19.
