Brush fire disrupts Keys access; Card Sound reopens, stretch partially closed

A brush fire that ignited Thursday afternoon near Card Sound Road and Southwest 392nd Street forced temporary road closures in southwest Miami-Dade, disrupting access to the Florida Keys.

The fire prompted the closure of both directions of the 18-Mile Stretch of U.S. 1 and Card Sound Road. By Friday morning, the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said all lanes on Card Sound Road had reopened.

MDSO deputies and Florida Highway Patrol troopers were assisting with traffic control in the area.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and the Florida Forest Service responded to the fire, which was upgraded to a second alarm and drew more than 20 units, including water tender trucks and Air Rescue helicopters conducting water drops.

Crews from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and the Florida Forest Service remain at the scene as of Friday morning.

Access in and out of the Florida Keys is expected to continue to be disrupted while crews work to extinguish the fire.

The Monroe County School District confirmed that schools in the Upper Keys will remain open. However, there will be no bus transportation for students returning home Friday. District officials asked parents and guardians to make arrangements to pick up their children.
