Police in Coral Gables are investigating a suspicious encounter that they say was captured on home surveillance video showing a man allegedly posing as a food delivery driver for DoorDash.

It happened just before 9 p.m. on May 15 near the 200 block of Florida Avenue.

An incident report states the resident told police that she saw the man kneeling in her yard through her home surveillance system. When she spoke to him through her doorbell camera, he claimed he was delivering pizza — but had no pizza box.

The woman refused to open the door, and the man eventually walked off toward Jefferson Drive, according to the report.

She is now staying elsewhere, telling Local 10 News she doesn’t feel safe at her home.

“I was terrified. I was home alone,” said Melissa, the resident of the home. ”He’s peeping in the glass. He is stepping past the no trespassing sign. He’s in the backyard. At no point, if there was ever any intent to deliver anything, he had no reason to go into my backyard.”

Coral Gables police said officers responded and canvassed the area but were unable to find him.

The man is described in the report as bald or having a shaved head, light-skinned, possibly Hispanic, and wearing a white shirt at the time of the incident.

Melissa said after the man walked past a no trespassing sign and into her back yard, he tried to open the back door. Unable to get inside, he eventually left just two minutes before police finally arrived.

“I have no idea what his intentions towards me were, so I’m disgusted. I haven’t slept in my home since Thursday,” she said. “I’ve never had an incident like this before and sadly this is just changing how I feel about the neighborhood, how I feel about my own home.”

She added that police have since identified the man, but it’s not yet known if he has been taken into custody or if he’s facing any charges.

Social media users have shared concerns the man may be targeting homes where women live alone, but Coral Gables police have not confirmed those claims.

Authorities said police body cameras were activated during their response.

They said the case remains under investigation and no other details were immediately released.

Anyone with information is urged to call Coral Gables Police Department at 305-442-1600 or Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
