Reimagining Urban Mobility: The Amble One Electric Buggy

A Vision Born from Community Needs

In the bustling landscape of Miami, where lifestyle and innovation intertwine, a former Apple designer has set his sights on revolutionizing how we navigate our neighborhoods. Julian Hoenig, who played a pivotal role in designing the Apple Watch, found inspiration not in the tech giants of Silicon Valley, but through a conversation that illuminated a gap in local transportation.

His friend, a resort owner, lamented the inadequacy of traditional golf carts for guest transport. This sparked a discussion that led Hoenig to envision a new type of vehicle: an electric buggy that could double as a stylish neighborhood transport. Thus, Amble was born, a startup aiming to bring the Amble One to market as a fresh alternative for urban mobility.

Designing for Connection

The Amble One’s design is a harmonious blend of function and aesthetic, drawing inspiration from the 1960s lunar rover. Hoenig, now at the helm of Amble’s design direction, emphasizes simplicity and recognizability in the vehicle’s form. Unlike conventional electric vehicles that often prioritize sleekness over interaction, the Amble One is crafted to foster a connection between the driver and their surroundings.

“We wanted to create a vehicle that encourages engagement with the environment,” explains Michael Tropper, cofounder and former Ford advanced design team member. “When you’re in an open vehicle, you’re more likely to converse with your neighbors and experience your surroundings in a tactile way.” This philosophy is reflected in the buggy’s open-frame design, which invites a sensory journey through the neighborhoods it traverses.

A New Paradigm for Urban Transport

As cities become more congested and the demand for sustainable transport rises, the Amble One positions itself as a viable alternative to traditional cars. Priced at approximately $25,000, it appeals to consumers who might otherwise consider smaller vehicles, such as Japanese kei trucks. The initial rollout is targeted at resorts in 2027, with plans to broaden availability to urban consumers in 2028.

The Amble One is not designed for high-speed travel; with a top speed of around 40 mph, it’s tailored for short, purposeful journeys—perfect for running errands or dropping off children at school. By limiting speed, Amble promotes a slower, more deliberate pace of life, encouraging users to appreciate their surroundings and foster community connections.

Innovative Features for Everyday Use

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the Amble One boasts a modular design that allows for customization and enhancement over time. Owners can look forward to adding features such as cargo boxes for deliveries, making it not just a vehicle but a versatile tool for urban living. The steering wheel crafted from cork and the canvas roof showcase a commitment to sustainability and ease of repair, ensuring longevity and practicality in everyday use.

This focus on materials and repairability reflects a shift in consumer expectations towards sustainability and design integrity. As urbanites become more conscious of their environmental impact, the Amble One stands out as a forward-thinking option that aligns with these values.

Embracing the Future of Mobility in Miami

For Miami, a city characterized by vibrant neighborhoods and an active lifestyle, the emergence of the Amble One represents a significant shift in urban mobility. As local governments and communities push for greener alternatives, vehicles like the Amble One could redefine how residents interact with their environment. The design philosophy behind the Amble One aligns seamlessly with Miami’s culture of outdoor living and community engagement.

As we look towards a future where urban transport must adapt to the evolving needs of residents, the Amble One not only offers a practical solution but also invites us to reconsider how we connect with our surroundings and each other. In an age where technology often isolates, Amble seeks to bring us back into the fold of community and nature.
