A New Dawn in Parque del Este

In the early morning hours, as the sun rises over Caracas, a sense of urgency fills the air at Parque del Este. Here, amidst the vibrant green surroundings, a Spanish field hospital known as EMT-1 springs to life, ready to serve those affected by the recent double earthquake. With more than 44 dedicated Spanish volunteers on the ground, the hospital is poised to provide essential medical care to over 200 patients each day.

Healing the Wounded and the Spirit

As patients line up outside the hospital, stories of loss and resilience unfold. Among them is Silvia Moreno, an emergency nurse whose journey began in Spain, and who now finds herself in the heart of a humanitarian crisis. Silvia’s dedication to nursing was ignited by her childhood dreams, and her experiences in disaster zones across the globe have only deepened her commitment.

“A single earthquake can devastate buildings and families alike,” she reflects, emphasizing the psychological scars that linger long after the physical wounds have healed. Despite the heavy emotional toll, Silvia remains a beacon of hope, reminding us of the profound strength found in human connection.

Solidarity in Times of Crisis

The Spanish field hospital is not just a medical facility; it embodies the spirit of solidarity. Under the auspices of the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), the hospital was established to provide free medical assistance to those affected by the earthquakes. Patients are welcomed from dawn until dusk, with a focus on comprehensive care, including pediatrics and mental health support.

Pilar Baselga, the mission leader, explains that many patients are presenting with respiratory issues, a stark reminder of the health challenges that often follow natural disasters. Yet, she notes the critical importance of mental health services, stating, “After a tragedy like this, it’s vital to seek help to overcome trauma.”

A Community United

For the local community, the arrival of the Spanish medical team has ignited a renewed sense of hope. Volunteers from various backgrounds—including local culinary students—are rallying to support the operation. Diego Domínguez, who coordinates the kitchen, emphasizes the impact of food in healing and unity. “The kitchen is a motor for helping and creating,” he says, as he guides volunteers in preparing daily meals for both patients and medical staff.

As the days unfold, the local volunteers bring their own stories of sacrifice and resilience, demonstrating that even in dire circumstances, the spirit of community thrives. Nora Muñoz, a culinary student, reflects, “We paused our lives for this. Venezuela needs us, and we can give everything for even a moment.”

The Reality of Loss

However, the atmosphere is not devoid of sorrow. Elvira de Perozo, a resident of La Guaira, shares her heartbreaking experience of the earthquakes. Her home, while still standing, has suffered damage that rendered it unlivable. Elvira’s voice trembles as she recounts the pain of losing loved ones and the sense of community that has been irrevocably altered.

“I am La Guaira,” she asserts, her identity intertwined with her home. The double earthquake has transformed her vibrant life into one filled with uncertainty, yet she remains grateful for the presence of the Spanish team, recognizing their efforts as a lifeline amid the chaos.

Gratitude Amidst Adversity

Despite the overwhelming challenges, the resilient spirit of the Venezuelan people shines through. Elvira expresses her heartfelt gratitude to the volunteers, saying, “Thank you for coming, for listening to our voices, for not leaving us alone.” Her words resonate deeply, encapsulating the profound connection that has formed between the volunteers and the community they serve.

As the Spanish field hospital continues its mission in Caracas, it stands as a testament to the power of human compassion and the indomitable will to help one another in times of need. This initiative not only addresses immediate medical concerns but also fosters a sense of hope and unity that transcends borders.
