Apollo Art Auctions Presents ‘Fine Ancient Art & Antiquities’ Auction

As the holiday season approaches, Apollo Art Auctions is set to captivate collectors and enthusiasts alike with its upcoming ‘Fine Ancient Art & Antiquities’ auction on December 15, 2024. This prestigious event will take place at the central London showroom located at 63 – 64 Margaret Street, W1W 8SW, and will also be accessible online via the Apollo Art Auctions platform, commencing at 3 p.m. GMT. This auction promises a remarkable journey through time, showcasing a diverse array of antiquities that span from 5000 BC to the 15th century AD.

A Rich Tapestry of History

This Christmas, Apollo Art Auctions invites you to explore a carefully curated selection of well-provenanced antiquities sourced from distinguished collections. Among the notable contributors are the estates of Alison Barker (1951–2021), Mrs. B. Ellison, W. Benson Harer, and institutions like the Drexel Institute and the Minneapolis Institute of Art. The auction also features pieces from renowned collectors such as Nahum Goldmann (1894–1982), Shlomo Moussaieff (1923–2015), and Dr. Guido Goldman (1937–2020). Each item tells a story, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of ancient civilizations.

Highlighted Lots: A Glimpse into Antiquity

The auction opens with an extraordinary piece: Lot 2, an Egyptian wooden boat model from the Middle Kingdom period. Carved from cedar wood and retaining its original pigmentation, this model reflects the profound significance of boats in Egyptian beliefs, symbolizing the journey of the soul to the afterlife. Such artifacts not only serve as artistic expressions but also as vital components of ancient spiritual practices.

Another standout item is Lot 55, a stunning red jasper vessel that exemplifies ancient Egyptian craftsmanship. Preserved in exceptional condition, this vessel would have been a symbol of status, likely used to hold precious perfumes and oils, showcasing the artistry and luxury of its time.

Greek Pottery and Mythological Jewelry

The auction also features a remarkable assemblage of Greek pottery, including Lot 87, a rare Attic black-glazed kylix. This large drinking cup is adorned with a satyr, a half-human, half-horse figure associated with Dionysus, the god of wine. The kylix’s design cleverly conceals the satyr’s image until the cup is filled with wine, making it a delightful conversation starter at Greek symposiums.

In addition to pottery, the auction offers a selection of fine and wearable jewelry. Lot 104, a rare Classical Period gold ring, showcases a dynamic mythological scene of a griffin attacking a galloping horse. The exceptional craftsmanship captures the energy of the moment, reflecting the artistic excellence characteristic of the Classical period.

Roman and Byzantine Treasures

Among the auction’s highlights is Lot 179, a life-sized marble head of Roman Emperor Septimius Severus. Known as the first African emperor, Severus rose through military ranks and established a powerful empire. His legacy is immortalized in monuments like the triumphal arch in the Roman Forum, which served as a symbol of political propaganda and architectural grandeur.

Closing the auction is Lot 295, a large, wearable gold medallion depicting Emperor Theodosius. This exquisite piece likely belonged to a high-ranking soldier or court official, exemplifying the influence and prestige of Byzantine art and culture. The medallion serves as a powerful representation of Christianity during a transformative period in history.

Viewing and Bidding Information

All auction lots will be available for viewing by appointment only from December 6 to December 13, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Visitors can experience the beauty and history of these artifacts firsthand, handled with care by Apollo’s white-gloved team, who ensure each item is prepared for in-house shipping. Conclusion

The ‘Fine Ancient Art & Antiquities’ auction by Apollo Art Auctions promises to be a remarkable event, offering a unique opportunity to acquire pieces that embody the artistry and cultural significance of ancient civilizations.
