A basketball coach at Nova High School has been arrested on sex-related charges involving a minor, authorities confirmed Monday.
Dequan Andre Sierra, 29, was taken into custody Friday by Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies from the Weston district, according to detectives.
He appeared in Broward bond court Saturday, where a judge found probable cause and set his bond at $50,000, which he has since posted.
Jail records show Sierra is facing one count of solicitation of a minor by an authoritative figure and one count of unlawful sexual activity with a person 16 or 17 years old.
According to the school’s website, Sierra worked as a school monitor and boys’ basketball coach. Authorities have not confirmed whether the victim is a student.
The school is located at 3600 College Ave. in Davie.
Detectives also confirmed that Sierra is a father of a 5-year-old and is listed as a caretaker of a 16-year-old.
Broward County Public Schools released a statement to Local 10 News on Monday, which read:
“BCPS is deeply disturbed by the allegations and remains committed to ensuring a safe and supportive environment for all students. The employee in question will be reassigned away from the school and students – pending the outcome of the investigation – and will face termination if the allegations are substantiated.”
As part of his bond conditions, Sierra has been ordered to have no contact with the victim or any minors.
Local 10 News has requested his arrest form from BSO.
