Indian Creek’s Triumph: Back-to-Back District Champions
A Stellar Performance
Indian Creek’s baseball team has once again proven its mettle, clinching the East District championship with an impressive 11-1 victory over Claymont. This win, achieved at Buckeye Trail High School, marks the Redskins’ second consecutive district title, showcasing their growth and determination on the field.
Dominance on the Mound
The standout performer of the day was pitcher Sal Barcalow, who delivered a masterful performance. Over six innings, Barcalow struck out five batters, walked only one, and allowed just four hits, including a solo home run. His ability to keep the opposing team off balance was crucial, and his teammates supported him with flawless defense, turning a pivotal double play and cutting down a run at the plate early in the game.
Head coach Mike Cottis praised Barcalow’s efforts, stating, “Sal did what Sal does. He kept them off balance, and we played some great defense behind him.” This combination of strong pitching and solid defense was instrumental in securing the victory.
Offensive Firepower
The Indian Creek offense was equally impressive, racking up 11 hits and drawing 10 walks throughout the game. Caleb Bodo led the charge with two hits and three RBIs, while Ian Starkey contributed two hits and two RBIs. Dom DeGruttola also made his mark with two RBIs, and Hunter Rusnak added two hits to the mix. The team’s ability to capitalize on base runners was evident, particularly in the third inning when they loaded the bases and scored five runs, effectively breaking the game open.
Game Highlights
The Redskins took an early lead in the first inning with Gavin Pownall’s two-out RBI double. Although they left the bases loaded in the first, they quickly regrouped in the third. DeGruttola’s sacrifice fly and Bodo’s swinging bunt single brought in crucial runs, pushing the score to 5-0. Claymont managed to score a run in the sixth inning, but Indian Creek responded decisively, scoring six runs in the bottom half to enforce the run rule and end the game early.
Looking Ahead
With this victory, Indian Creek advances to the regional tournament, aiming for a second consecutive regional title. They will face off against Carrollton, the East 1 District champion, in the Region 15 semifinals. The two teams have met twice this season, splitting their matchups, which promises an exciting contest ahead.
Celebrating Success
As the team hoisted the district championship trophy, the joy and pride were palpable. Coach Cottis reflected on the significance of this achievement, noting the hard work and dedication of his players. “Going back-to-back is great; it’s a special feeling. These boys are a special group,” he said.
The journey continues for Indian Creek as they strive to make their mark in the regional tournament, fueled by the momentum of their recent success and the unwavering support of their community.
