Mia Francis: A Beacon of Connection in St. John’s

In the heart of St. John’s, where winter can often feel isolating, Mia Francis is on a mission to bring people together. Originally from the United Kingdom, Francis has made a name for herself as an event planner, transforming her passion for gatherings into a thriving business. With her company, Chic Celebrations, she is not only creating memorable events but also fostering community connections through her innovative Chic Socials.

A Journey from the UK to Labrador

Mia Francis’s journey began in the United Kingdom, where her love for organizing events blossomed in the company of friends and family. After moving to Labrador at a young age, she continued to nurture this passion, eventually leading her to St. John’s. Her background in the aviation industry, where she decorated luxury events, provided her with invaluable experience that she now channels into her own business.

Chic Celebrations: A New Venture

Last January, Francis opened her event space on Water Street, a location she chose for its inviting atmosphere and abundant natural light. The space, once an office, has been transformed into a warm and welcoming venue perfect for a variety of events. "It’s really great vibes," she says, reflecting on the positive energy that fills her new home.

Chic Celebrations has quickly gained traction, especially after her extravagant wedding proposals captured the attention of social media users on TikTok. Today, her services range from intimate gatherings to grand weddings, showcasing her versatility and creativity as an event planner.

Chic Socials: Combating Winter Isolation

Recognizing the challenges of social interaction during the harsh winter months, Francis launched Chic Socials—events and workshops designed to encourage people to step out of their homes and connect with others. "It’s for people that are looking to meet friends and be social, [and] kind of beat those winter blues," she explains.

When Francis first arrived in St. John’s, she experienced the difficulty of making new friends. This personal challenge inspired her to create a space where others could come together organically. Chic Socials focuses on wellness-based events, offering activities like vision board workshops, terrarium making, watercolor painting, and crafting sessions. Her inaugural event, centered around creating vision boards, aimed to help participants set intentions and goals for the year ahead. "We had a great turnout," she recalls, pleased with the community response.

Supporting Diversity and Community

Mia Francis is also deeply committed to supporting diversity within her community. She emphasizes the importance of uplifting Black-owned businesses, recognizing the need for representation in Newfoundland’s less diverse landscape. "Whether it’s purchasing their products or giving them a shout-out, it’s crucial," she asserts.

Looking ahead, Francis aims to host events that celebrate and unite the Black community in St. John’s. Her vision includes creating gatherings that showcase Black excellence and foster a sense of belonging among community members. "That’s kind of my next milestone," she shares, excited about the potential for connection and celebration.

Conclusion

Mia Francis is more than just an event planner; she is a catalyst for community engagement and connection in St. John’s. Through Chic Celebrations and Chic Socials, she is not only transforming spaces but also lives, helping individuals combat winter isolation and build meaningful relationships. As she continues to grow her business and support her community, Francis stands as a beacon of hope and connection in a city that can sometimes feel cold and distant.
