Healing Hands: Empowering Amputees in Venezuela Post-Earthquake

A Community in Crisis

In the aftermath of the devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24, 2026, the country faces an alarming reality for many of its citizens. While news reports have highlighted the loss of life and widespread injuries, the long-term implications for those who became amputees remain largely unaddressed. With an unclear national registry of amputees, the urgent need for resources, psychological support, and prosthetic components is more crucial than ever.

Grassroots Initiatives Rising to the Challenge

Despite the overwhelming circumstances, local heroes are stepping up to provide essential support for those affected. Among them is Professor Víctor Peñaloza, an orthoprothetist at the Central University of Venezuela’s Faculty of Engineering. He leads a project called Ingenio en Acción, which focuses on crafting protective limb covers for patients undergoing rehabilitation. These covers, made from elastic neoprene, are designed to reduce inflammation and aid in the healing process.

Peñaloza explains that while the need for prosthetics is evident, the initial focus must be on the emotional and psychological well-being of the amputees. Each patient requires a tailored approach to help them navigate their grief and uncertainty, making this work as much about compassion as it is about engineering.

Collaboration and Community Support

Ingenio en Acción collaborates with the Association of Social Workers to gather critical data on amputees in need of rehabilitation. Their goal is ambitious: to produce and donate 400 limb covers—an endeavor that requires resources and community support. So far, they have distributed 150 covers, but the need continues to grow.

Additionally, the Humanitarian Fund 77 has emerged, uniting various organizations to subsidize medical supplies, rehabilitation therapies, and prosthetic components for the most vulnerable families. With an initial capital of $277,000, this initiative aims to expand its impact, targeting a total of $2 million to serve the increasing number of amputees and those with severe injuries.

Comprehensive Care and Rehabilitation

At the forefront of rehabilitation is Dr. Ana Cardozo, director of the Amputee Clinic at the Children’s Orthopedic Hospital. Her team is dedicated to providing holistic care, focusing on both physical and psychological evaluations of their patients. The process begins with assessing the healing of the residual limb before introducing prosthetic devices, a critical step to ensure proper fit and functionality.

Children, like a six-year-old boy recently hospitalized for three weeks following his rescue, require special attention as their bodies grow. The prosthetics must be adjusted regularly, highlighting the importance of continuous support from institutions and the community.

Long-Term Solutions and the Road Ahead

The ongoing crisis has underscored the necessity for a well-coordinated response that involves healthcare, engineering, and social management. As the demand for prosthetics increases, so does the urgency to streamline the importation of necessary components, which can otherwise take months. The current focus is on enabling each patient to regain independence and reintegrate into their daily lives.

Moreover, the Misión José Gregorio Hernández (MJGH) has been actively working on the ground to address the historical backlog of individuals awaiting prosthetic solutions. Reports indicate that there are currently a thousand individuals with various musculoskeletal disabilities on a waiting list, and the recent earthquakes have only compounded this challenge.

The Human Spirit Shines Through

As these grassroots initiatives continue to unfold, they provide a glimmer of hope amidst despair. The resilience of both the individuals affected and the communities coming together to support them exemplifies the strength of the human spirit. In Miami, where many Venezuelans have sought refuge, these stories resonate deeply, reminding us of the importance of solidarity and support in the face of adversity.

As we reflect on the ongoing situation in Venezuela, it is crucial to recognize the power of collaboration and compassion in transforming lives. The journey towards recovery for the amputees is far from over, but with continued support and innovation, a brighter future is within reach.
