Sea Cloud Yacht Review: A Journey Through Time and Elegance

If only Marjorie Merriweather Post were here to see this, I think, as our crew clambers up the square riggings more than a hundred feet off the deck to unfurl 20 massive sails. The sight of those sails catching the wind is a spectacle that would have delighted her. Marjorie, the cereal heiress, businesswoman, socialite, philanthropist, and collector of French and Russian imperial decorative arts, commissioned the Sea Cloud in 1931. At that time, it was the largest private yacht in the world, a floating palace that embodied her extravagant lifestyle.

A Legacy of Luxury

Marjorie Merriweather Post was not content to simply cruise the waters off the U.S. coasts. She and her beloved Sea Cloud traversed the Caribbean islands and the waterways of St. Petersburg, hosting a myriad of notable guests along the way. Every inch of the yacht’s interiors was designed under her watchful eye, from the gilded staterooms to the elegantly paneled formal dining room. Marjorie was the queen of Sea Cloud, and her legacy is palpable as I step aboard this historic vessel.

Today, Sea Cloud has been lovingly restored and is under the thoughtful stewardship of German owners. Since 1981, it has been sailing the world’s waters, offering 28 staterooms, 10 of which are historic, including Marjorie’s own luxurious quarters and some of her original possessions. The yacht has survived the trials of World War II and a tumultuous ownership under a Caribbean dictator, emerging as a testament to maritime elegance and history.

A Romantic Voyage

My experience aboard Sea Cloud feels like stepping into a dream. Over the course of 10 days, I explore the enchanting Greek islands, Baroque Italian cities, and Croatia’s medieval walled towns, journeying from Athens to Venice. The highlight of our voyage is a stately entrance into the Grand Canal, where Sea Cloud is the only commercial cruise ship permitted to navigate the historic city’s inner sanctum.

The itinerary is thoughtfully curated, blending historical tours, culinary tastings, and leisurely shopping excursions, with plenty of opportunities to bask in the sun on the Aegean and Adriatic coasts. Yet, it is the life aboard the ship that continually reminds me of its rich history and personal connection to Marjorie Merriweather Post.

Dining in Elegance

Dining aboard Sea Cloud is an experience steeped in history. I savor meals in Marjorie’s original dining room, surrounded by the elegance she once enjoyed. The Lido Deck offers a breezy alternative, where I can relax on teak loungers, watching the stunning scenery unfold as it did for Marjorie and her guests. Each sunset over Dubrovnik feels like a toast to the past, as I slip into one of the original staterooms, fully aware of the illustrious figures who have graced this yacht.

Enriching Experiences Onboard

This particular journey is made even more special by the presence of Thomas Wu, a curator from the Hillwood Estate, Museum and Gardens, Marjorie’s final home in Washington, D.C. He is aboard to preview an upcoming exhibition titled “Setting Sail: The Story of Sea Cloud,” which opens on February 15, 2025. This exhibition will showcase the yacht’s creation and storied life, featuring original drawings and examples of Marjorie’s fine china used for entertaining.

Wu’s expertise adds depth to our voyage, as he delivers lectures on the ship, complementing the insights provided by our shipboard historian, archaeologist Frank Hildebrandt. Together, we delve into the decorative arts and the life of Marjorie Post, discussing everything from her four husbands to her collection of Fabergé eggs.

A Tribute to a Remarkable Woman

As I sail aboard Sea Cloud, I am reminded of the remarkable woman who envisioned this vessel. Hillwood’s executive director, Kate Markert, aptly states, “The original Sea Cloud embodies all that was so remarkable about Marjorie Merriweather Post.” The yacht is not just a mode of transportation; it is a work of art, a tribute to a pioneering spirit who embraced life with elegance and flair.

In conclusion, my time aboard Sea Cloud is a journey through history, luxury, and the spirit of adventure. Each moment spent on this magnificent yacht is a reminder of the legacy of Marjorie Merriweather Post and the timeless allure of sailing the open seas. With its billowing sails and storied past, Sea Cloud remains a symbol of romance and elegance, inviting all who board to partake in its rich narrative.
