The 2025 BMW i4 M50 Gran Coupe: A Thrilling Electric Experience

From the moment I sunk into its bucket seats and gently tapped the accelerator, I instantly knew that the BMW i4 M50 Gran Coupe was going to be a beast of an electric vehicle (EV). After a year dominated by crossovers and SUVs, driving an all-electric sedan felt like a refreshing change. Little did I know that after a week behind the wheel of the 2025 BMW i4 M50 Gran Coupe, I would discover the most exhilarating EV experience of the year.

A Luxury Sports Car with a Price Tag

Billed as a luxury all-electric sports car, the BMW i4 M50 Gran Coupe comes with a starting MSRP of $70,700. The model I drove, complete with various options and packages, totaled around $76,575. While this price point is certainly on the higher end, it’s hard to deny the status symbol that this vehicle represents. In fact, it garnered more compliments from strangers than the Kia EV9, a testament to its striking design.

However, a luxury vehicle must offer more than just good looks to compete with other high-end EVs like the Lucid Air Pure, Cadillac Lyriq, and Genesis GV60. Here’s a closer look at what I liked and didn’t like about the BMW i4 M50 Gran Coupe.

2025 BMW i4 M50 Gran Coupe: Specifications

Specification Details
Battery 83 kWh
Motor Dual motor 200–400 kW
Range 267 miles
Horsepower 536 hp
Wheels 20 inches
MSRP $70,700

Testing Summary

During my week with the BMW i4 M50 Gran Coupe, I clocked in 461.5 miles. While this is slightly less than the 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV 2LT, the driving experience was nothing short of thrilling. The car’s acceleration and tight steering reminded me of childhood racing games like Ridge Racer and Gran Turismo, making every drive feel like an adventure.

Despite averaging 2.9 mi/kWh, which is a bit below the 3 mi/kWh mark, efficiency wasn’t a major concern for me. However, for daily drivers, nightly charging is essential to maintain a decent battery level. I utilized Level 1 charging at home, which was slow but manageable, adding about 16 miles of range over 7 hours.

What I Like About the BMW i4 M50 Gran Coupe

Tight Steering

The handling of the BMW i4 M50 Gran Coupe is a standout feature. The tight steering allows for confident maneuvering through curves, making it a joy to drive. The car feels stable and responsive, ensuring that I never felt out of control, even during spirited driving.

Intense Acceleration

Forget the need for a dedicated boost button; the i4 M50 Gran Coupe delivers lightning-fast acceleration in any drive mode. With 536 hp, the car slams you back into your seat with every push of the pedal, creating an exhilarating driving experience that gets the adrenaline pumping.

Sporty Meets Luxury Design

The design of the BMW i4 M50 Gran Coupe is a perfect blend of sporty and luxurious. The Vegas Red Metallic paint job sparkles in the sunlight, and the overall aesthetic has a unique charm that draws compliments from onlookers.

Extra Large Head-Up Display

The head-up display (HUD) in the i4 M50 is impressively large and sharp, allowing for easy visibility of speed and navigation directions without taking my eyes off the road. This feature enhances the driving experience, making it safer and more convenient.

Bright Displays

Both the 14.5-inch main touchscreen and the 12.3-inch instrument panel are high-quality displays that remain easy to read in any lighting condition. This is a significant advantage over other EVs I’ve tested, which often struggle with visibility in bright sunlight.

Excellent Sound Proofing

The soundproofing in the BMW i4 M50 Gran Coupe is exceptional. While driving through busy areas, I was amazed at how quiet the cabin remained, creating a serene driving environment that felt almost like being in a luxury sound booth.

Smooth Cruise Control System

The smart cruise control system in the i4 M50 is impressively smooth, reacting to road conditions without abrupt changes in speed. This feature allows for a more relaxed driving experience, especially on long trips.

Stunning Lights Everywhere

The lighting design of the BMW i4 M50 Gran Coupe is captivating, both during the day and at night. The customizable ambient lights and unique brake light design add an extra layer of sophistication to the vehicle.

What I Don’t Like About the BMW i4 M50 Gran Coupe

Minimal Leg Room in the Rear

While the i4 M50 is a sedan, the rear seats feel cramped, with limited legroom and low roof clearance. This may not be an issue for younger passengers, but adults may find it uncomfortable on longer journeys.

No Options for Blindspot Cameras

Despite being a luxury vehicle, the i4 M50 lacks the option for blindspot cameras, which I found useful in other EVs. Instead, it relies on traditional blind spot monitoring, which, while helpful, doesn’t provide the same level of visibility.

Short Range

With a range of 267 miles, the BMW i4 M50 Gran Coupe falls short of the 300-mile benchmark that many consumers expect from modern EVs. While this isn’t a dealbreaker given its performance, it would be nice to see improvements in this area.

Bottom Line

If there’s one EV I would want to drive again, the 2025 BMW i4 M50 Gran Coupe tops my list. It’s an exciting vehicle that excels in performance and handling while turning heads with its stunning design and premium features. While it may not be the best choice for families due to its limited rear space and range, it serves as an excellent second car for those looking to enjoy the thrill of driving in style.
