Introducing the Aquila 36 Molokai

Dropping between Aquila’s 28- and 47-foot Molokai models, the 36 Molokai adds to the builder’s model lineup nicely with a midsize power catamaran that is designed to do many things well.

As you can see in the image above, the 36 Molokai’s primary focus is being a first-to-the-grounds fish boat with speed to spare. On this initial point, the 36 Molokai has a single-level deck with 360-degree walkaround space, as well as a foredeck casting platform. Whether it’s pitching a live bait to a mahi under a board or setting up kites for sailfish, this setup should make it easy on the anglers and the crew.

With practicality in mind, there are two 53-gallon in-transom livewells to keep those goggle-eyes frisky, a fold-down bait-prep center to rig them, tackle stowage with removable trays, in-sole boxes that convert to livewells or tuna tubes, and 12 rod holders that are standard. Add outriggers and an upper steering station to keep an eye on the spread, and the 36 Molokai is ready to fish.

With regard to performance, owners have choices. The standard pairing is twin 300 hp Mercury V-8s, but 400 hp and 425 hp V-10s are optional. Twin 400Rs and 500Rs are also available, for those interested in time travel.

To take advantage of the big power, the 36 Molokai runs on a double-stepped twin hull form with a high tunnel clearance aimed at reducing sneezing and making for a quieter ride. The powercat’s form is built with vinylester resin-infused fiberglass and strengthened with an infused structural grid, creating a monocoque structure. Carbon fiber reinforcement is used in high-stress areas for support. The hardtop is carbon fiber, too. The hull and deck come with a five-year warranty.

For owners who are dayboaters, the cockpit has a sink, cutting board and four cupholders. A barbecue is optional. The transom freshwater washdown makes for a quick rinse after a swim via the stainless-steel swim ladder on centerline. There’s also a fiberglass dive/boarding door to starboard.

For owners who want to stay overnight, there is a berth belowdecks that can accommodate a couple.

Midsize and performance-focused with a stable twin hull form and an angling edge, the Aquila 36 Molokai is an intriguing option.
