Yellowjackets hasn’t been officially renewed for a fourth season, but there are some clues left by Showtime for a positive outcome. Variety shares that the viewership grew with every season of the show; almost 2 million people watched the season premiere, more than in season two, and viewership remained consistent. Throughout the series, showrunners Ashley Lyle, Bart Nickerson, and Jonathan Lisco have all said they planned for a five-season run of the show. Lyle explained to Entertainment Weekly in 2023: “We don’t really see this as being more than a five-season show. I think that there are shows that can go forever, but I think that when you’re telling such a deeply serialized story and it’s about these characters’ lives, you want to reach a satisfying conclusion and not just drag things out forever. This isn’t really one of those setup shows where it can go anywhere.”
The finale of season three hints at the possibility of some sort of rescue for the gals. And even if there is a rescue in season four, there’s still more story to tell in the flashbacks. Lyle told the Los Angeles Times, “These girls have changed remarkably, for better or for worse, in their time out there, especially because of their age. They’re so malleable to begin with, and they’ve become very different people. And to see those people readjust to a world that is almost — I wouldn’t say insignificant to them; it’s obviously very significant — foreign to them now in a way that we think would be really ripe for storytelling and to dig deeper into their characters.”
