In the midst of Karla Sofía Gascón’s day-long posting fast, Emilia Pérez director Jacques Audiard opened up about his feelings regarding the controversy about his star’s past tweets. After news broke that Netflix would no longer be sending Gascón to the United States for the Critics Choice Awards or Producers Guild Awards, Audiard spoke to Deadline, addressing both his feelings about Gascón’s statements, which he likened to falling in a hole. “It’s very hard for me to think back to the work I did with Karla Sofía,” he shared. “The trust we shared, the exceptional atmosphere that we had on the set that was indeed based on trust. And when you have that kind of relationship and suddenly you read something that that person has said, things that are absolutely hateful and worthy of being hated, of course that relationship is affected.”

Audiard went on to explain that he has yet to speak with Gascón and doesn’t want to because she “is in a self-destructive approach” he doesn’t want to interfere with. He went on to explain that he intends to champion Emilia Pérez’s other acting nominee, Zoe Saldaña, as well as the film’s crew going forward.

Audiard also addressed some of the controversy around Emilia Pérez as a film, as well as his past comments in which he said that Spanish was the language of a “developing country.” He was specific to mention that he did not intend to make a documentary about Mexico or the cartels. “Opera has psychological limitations. It seems I’m being attacked in the court of realism,” Audiard added. He stands by the film’s heightened representation of Mexico, noting that cinema’s function is to ask questions, not answer them. Answering questions, unfortunately, seems to be the burden of his week.
