Kendrick Lamar and SZA Take a Victory Lap

On Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s hit collab “Luther,” off Lamar’s album GNX, a sample of Luther Vandross intones, “If this world were mine,” over and over. But for Lamar and SZA, that’s no longer an “if.” The two finally released what a press release calls a “visual,” but is just a music video, for “Luther” on April 11. Normally, music videos are promotional tools for the music, but this track has already spent seven consecutive weeks in the No. 1 spot on the “Hot 100,” breaking both Lamar and SZA’s own record for chart toppers. In the video, directed by Karena Evans, both SZA and Lamar pose with models, walk around some brutalist architecture, and insert dramatic pauses. Then, at the end, the original Vandross version of “If This World Were Mine” plays. The music video comes two months after the two performed together at the Super Bowl and just over a week before Lamar and SZA’s joint stadium tour, Grand National Tour, kicks off in Minneapolis.
