Looks like Stitch and Tom Cruise aren’t family, because the live-action Lilo & Stitch is leaving Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning behind at the box office. Both movies were released on May 23. Per Deadline, the Disney remake, which is booked at 4,410 theaters, made between $56 million and $59 million on Friday. In comparison, Mission: Impossible 8, booked at 3,857 theaters, opened to $25 million. Lilo & Stitch is reportedly on track to make between $170 million and $180 million for its four-day opening this Memorial Day weekend, which means it will comfortably cruise past the current holiday record set by Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick ($160.5 million) in 2022. There’s no need to feel too sorry for Cruise, though. Mission: Impossible 8 is still going to be setting some franchise records at the box office this weekend. After its $25 million opening showing on Friday, the film is projected to reach $64 million after three days and $78 million after four days. That means it’ll set new Mission: Impossible records, beating 2018’s Fallout, which previously had the franchise’s biggest opening ($22.8 million) and biggest 3-day ($61 million) performance.

This isn’t the first time these two Hollywood stars have faced off before. Cruise previously edged out the original animated Lilo & Stitch at the box office with his 2002 film Minority Report, $35.6 million to $35.2 million, so this is payback more than 20 years in the making. Congrats, Stitch.
