Link’s exploding cart is making its journey into show business. A few years after the initial film announcement, we finally have some updates, including when we’re gonna see the damn thing.

Who’s directing and writing the movie?

Nintendo announced a live-action The Legend of Zelda movie will be directed by The Maze Runner’s Wes Ball. “This is Miyamoto. I have been working on the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda for many years now with Avi Arad-san, who has produced many mega hit films,” wrote Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto in a post in 2023. Arad was the founder and former chairman and CEO of Marvel Studios, where he produced many Sony-Marvel films like the Tom Holland Spidey franchise (but we can never forget his involvement in a really successful doll movie). Ball shared he wants the film to be more “grounded” and “real” and he’d love to be the “live-action Miyazaki” when it comes to his directing style.

As for the screenwriter, Deadline reports that T.S. Nowlin is writing the script for the film. The Zelda flick will be co-financed by Nintendo and Sony, with Nintendo fronting most of the money.

Has anyone been cast yet?

Not yet, but the campaign for Hunter Schafer to play Zelda has been going hard since 2022. Patricia Summersett, who voices Zelda in the video games, also threw her hat in the ring, telling Games Radar she “would love to play Zelda over and over again.” Haley Joel Osment expressed interest in playing Link; however, he does wish the movie would’ve come out earlier in his career. He told IGN, ” Link was like 37 when he did all this, right!? Seventeen, 37? As a kid, I was like, ‘obviously they’re gonna make [Ocarina of Time] a movie soon, the story’s all written out for you!’ And you’re like, ‘that’d be very challenging to make into a compelling two-hour movie.’ “

When does the movie come out?

Nintendo announced through the new Nintendo Today! app that the Legend of Zelda movie comes to theaters on March 26, 2027. It comes one week after Sonic 4… does that mean there’s a Legend of Sonic double feature brewing?
