What came first: the chicken jockey or the lava chicken? Either way, it’s serving up an obsession with A Minecraft Movie one way or another. Jack Black’s song, “Steve’s Lava Chicken” has entered the UK top singles charts, peaking at no. 21 this week, up from no. 77 during its debut. Oh, you don’t know the “Lava Chicken” song? It’s crispy, juicy, and super spicy. It’s also the shortest song ever to chart on the UK Top Singles at 34 seconds long. “Lava Chicken” isn’t even the lead single for the movie’s soundtrack— “I feel alive” is and features Dave Grohl on drums, Troy Van Leeuwen on guitar, Roger Joseph Manning Jr. on the keys, and Mark Ronson on rhythm guitar and bass. But none of that matters as long as there’s lava on a chicken— that’s what the people want!
While out on one of his many walks, Black reacted to the news, thanking gamers for putting his song on the charts. “I just heard that ‘Steve’s Lava Chicken’ has cracked the UK Top 40. I just want to send big love to all the Minecraft fans for getting us up there. It’s insane; it makes me wanna sing,” Black declared on Instagram Stories before breaking out into song. While this week’s Billboard charts haven’t come out yet, there’s a good chance that “Lava Chicken” could dethrone “Peaches” as Black’s next big videogame hit. Academy voters, please remember the chicken when it’s time for Best Original Song.
