Oh, Hi!’s Molly Gordon Says Relationships Can Feel Like a Horror Movie

Modern dating is a nightmare; why do you think there are so many reality shows about it? Oh, Hi!’s Molly Gordon, who also helped come up with the concept of the film with writer and director Sophie Brooks, explained how the two connected romance to a new genre. “Sometimes when you’re in a relationship, there are moments that feel like a horror movie,” Gordon said of the film’s plot and twist. “When you’re having a miscommunication and you’re like, ‘Fucking listen to me!’ and they’re like, ‘No, I will not,’ and then they leave. We wanted all the turns to feel really earned.” However, not everyone in the cast found relatable moments in the film. When the actors were asked if they had drawn from any personal experiences in their performances, John Reynolds laughed and simply said “no.” Lucky guy!

Oh, Hi! follows a couple (Logan Lerman and Gordon) as their relationship begins to unravel while on a weekend getaway. Brooks wanted to show how much dating, relationships, and situationships have changed, especially in the last ten years. “It was really interesting how, in this culture of dating apps and even Instagram and things, there are all these new words to describe dating, like situationships or ghosting or gaslighting — all of these words that we have to kind of excuse just treating people kindly. It’s a fun world to explore with real meaning and also kind of poke fun at certain things.”

We’re back at Sundance in the Vulture Spot, where we’re interviewing the casts and creators of the year’s buzziest films. Check out the rest of our coverage from the film fest here.
