Rob Lowe, basically the Boz Scaggs of the Brat Pack, had a 1980s like many others on the Pacific Coast: He did a ton of cocaine and listened to yacht rock. So much so, in fact, that he attempted to keep riding those waves off the lido deck and into a studio. As he recalled on his new Literally! podcast episode, the actor recorded material with Toto — some of the most prolific session musicians ever committed to sound — that never got released. “There was a minute in the ’80s when I was definitely doing too much Bolivian marching powder and just being a fucking lunatic,” he explained. “And also coming at the time in a young actor’s career where they’re too old to play the roles they’ve been playing, but they’re too young to play the roles that will last you the rest of your life, which are really the great ones.” Lowe’s love of music convinced him that Steve Lukather, the Porcaro brothers, and David Paich were exactly what he needed to hold his (creative) line at the time. “I got it into my head that maybe I should think more about a music career, and I cut a demo with Toto,” he added. “I took having fun very seriously.” Lowe didn’t elaborate further, so all we want to know is … did he ask about the Thriller sessions?
