After the franchise fired its modern star Melissa Barrera over posts in support of Palestine, Scream 7 casting seems designed to lure fans back in. Matthew Lillard, who played one of the original Scream villains Stu Macher, will return. Lillard confirmed the casting in an Instagram post where he wrote out “My mom and dad are gonna be soo mad at me!!” He joins Neve Campbell, the original Scream queen, back after initially holding out for financial reasons. They’ll be joined by Courteney Cox, Scott Foley, Mason Gooding, and Jasmin Savoy Brown. Scream VI lead Jenna Ortega is not returning to the franchise, however.

The movie was originally going to be directed by Christopher Landon (Happy Death Day), who tweeted then deleted “This was not my decision to make,” on November 22, 2023, after Barrera’s firing. A month later, on December 23, Landon revealed on X that he had stepped down from the franchise, describing the experience as “a dream job that turned into a nightmare.” He has since been replaced by franchise creator Kevin Williamson, who will be directing a Scream for the first time, after scripting the first, second, and fourth installments. “I am overcome with gratitude and excitement, and I can’t wait to take this journey with Neve and the entire Scream family,” he wrote in a March 12, 2024, Instagram post. But the movie isn’t all reprisals, with Isabel May, Celeste O’Connor, Asa Germann, Mckenna Grace, Sam Rechner, Anna Camp, Joel McHale, and Mark Consuelos making their franchise debut. Scream 7 is out on February 27, 2026, as long as there’s no more drama.
