Some South Florida stores out of eggs as supply falls, prices rise

The egg shortage continues to cause sticker shock at grocery stores across the country, if you’re lucky enough to find a dozen on store shelves.

The shortage is due to the avian flu, which is responsible for the deaths of more than 40 million egg-laying birds last year.

Some stores in South Florida don’t have any eggs, like the Trader Joe’s in Davie.

Employees say they had a limited shipment come in around 8 a.m. Monday and a few hours later, they sold out.

The Costco down the street on University Drive was also sold out, with the area that normally holds eggs now filled with milk.

Due to the shortage, some grocery stores are limiting the amount of eggs customers can buy per day.

A lucky Costco in Pembroke Pines had a limited supply of eggs Monday morning and a sign telling customers they were only allowed to buy three packages.

Trader Joe’s also placed a limit, sending Local 10 News a statement that read, in part:

“Due to ongoing issues with the supply of eggs, we are currently limiting egg purchases to one dozen per customer, per day, in all Trader Joe’s stores across the country.”

Due to the short supply, egg prices rose 14% from November to December alone.
