The Humane Society of Broward County received a surprise visit Saturday from Florida Panthers forward Sam Bennett and his fiancée — and they brought along the Conn Smythe Trophy.
The couple stopped by the shelter’s “Florida Panthers” kitty room, where they spent time with a playful kitten named Marchy, who made himself right at home by climbing on top of the trophy after making his Local 10 debut earlier in the day.
Marchy’s littermates — Blizzard, DQ and Confetti — also enjoyed the attention.
To celebrate the Panthers’ Stanley Cup victory, the shelter is offering half-price adoptions for all felines through June 23.
That amounts to a savings of more than $60 on kitten adoptions and $40 for cats older than six months.
The visit was part of a broader ongoing partnership between Bennett and the shelter.
Through his “Benny’s Buddies” program, Bennett covers the adoption fee for one animal for every goal he scores in the regular season and playoffs.
So far, 28 pets have been adopted through the program, with six more currently waiting for homes and others yet to be selected.
HSBC’s Cherie Wachter said all adopted animals at the shelter are spayed or neutered, microchipped and receive preliminary vaccinations. They also go home with a 14-day limited health care plan provided by VCA Animal Hospitals.
The shelter, located at 2070 Griffin Road in Fort Lauderdale, is open seven days a week, with the adoption department opening daily at 11 a.m.
