“It’s gonna be May” — NSYNC, but also Anna Wintour when you ask her when the Met Gala is every year. During the first Monday of every May, the stars dress up on a pre-decided theme and answer chaotic questions about their fashion choices on the red carpet; this year, the exhibit that will be celebrated is “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” inspired by “Black dandy” counter-colonial style— the chaotic questions are TBH. The dress code for the evening is “Tailored for you.” But who are the “you” in question? Here’s everyone who’s heading to Celebrity Prom on Monday, May 5 and who had to pass on the occasion.
Who’s confirmed to go?
For starters, the four co-hosts Colman Domingo, A$AP Rocky, Lewis Hamilton, and Pharrell Williams, alongside Anna Wintour, are all heading to the Met come Monday. We’re even getting a bonus co-host as LeBron James joins as the honorary chair of the evening, making his Met Gala debut. Vogue is reviving the host committee this year as well, consisting of André 3000, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Jordan Casteel, Dapper Dan, Doechii, Ayo Edebiri, Edward Enninful, Jeremy O. Harris, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, Rashid Johnson, Spike Lee and Tonya Lewis Lee, Audra McDonald, Janelle Monáe, Jeremy Pope, Angel Reese, Sha’Carri Richardson, Tyla, Usher, and Kara Walker. Law Roach also confirmed that he and Zendaya are “going to be” walking up the steps.
Of course, the first thought after learning A$AP Rocky is hosting is: where’s Rihanna? She confirmed to Entertainment Tonight she’ll be his 1+ and that there’s no plan in place for the couple, at least not in October of last year: “All we have planned is to be there.”
Who’s probably going?
While there’s always been plenty of rumors of who’s going to the Met Gala, there are some hints of who might have gotten an invite. Alongside Law Roach, GQ published a piece with stars like Edebiri, Monáe, LaKeith Stanfield, Yara Shahidi, and more weighing in on how dandyism affected their sense of fashion— notably, Shadidi and Stanfield aren’t members of the host committee. Page Six claims Madonna, Stevie Wonder, and Diana Ross are all getting dolled up for the evening, as well as Lauryn Hill, Lorde, and Shaboozey. We can also assume there will be a member of the Kardashian family — Kim hasn’t missed a gala since 2012.
Who passed?
Most people aren’t quick to say they’re passing on one of fashion’s biggest nights, but alas, scheduling conflicts. Sarah Jessica Parker told Entertainment Tonight that she’s working on Monday (relatable!), so she has to miss out on the fun.
