The Yacht Pelorus: A Floating Icon Seeking New Owners

In the world of luxury yachting, few vessels command as much attention as the Pelorus. As one of the largest private yachts globally, this magnificent vessel is now on the market, presenting a unique opportunity for discerning buyers to own a piece of maritime history. Launched in 2003, Pelorus was a game changer for her era, and her impressive specifications and storied past only add to her allure.

A Record-Breaking Launch

With a gross tonnage exceeding 5,400 tons, the Pelorus measures an impressive 377 feet (115 meters) in length. Upon her delivery, she was the largest yacht ever launched by the renowned German shipyard Lürssen, and she ranked among the top ten largest yachts from any shipyard worldwide at that time. Commissioned by a Saudi national, Pelorus was sold after just a year to Roman Abramovich, the high-profile owner of Chelsea Football Club. Following Abramovich, the yacht changed hands to other notable figures, including American media mogul David Geffen. Throughout her ownership, Pelorus has remained a strictly private vessel, shrouded in mystery and intrigue, despite persistent rumors about her advanced security features.

Exceptional Design and Features

Pelorus is not just about size; her design and layout are equally remarkable. The yacht boasts a beam of 56 feet (17 meters), providing ample space for luxurious amenities and accommodations. Uniquely for a yacht built in the early 2000s, Pelorus features several deploying balconies that enhance the onboard experience. Two balconies complement the main saloon and dining area, while another fold-down platform extends from a lower-deck guest stateroom, creating an inviting outdoor space. Additionally, the gym benefits from an opening balcony, allowing guests to enjoy fresh air while working out.

Accommodations for All

While many yachts of Pelorus’s size typically feature numerous cabins, her configuration is distinct. The yacht accommodates up to 36 guests across just 12 staterooms, with three located below decks, two on the main deck, and the majority on the upper deck. The master suite, a true pièce de résistance, spans the full beam of the yacht and includes a butler’s cabin, direct access to one of the two helipads, and breathtaking views from nearly every angle. The decor throughout the yacht reflects an island casual aesthetic, featuring rich woods, luxurious leathers, and an overall sense of tranquility.

A World of Leisure and Entertainment

Pelorus is designed for both relaxation and adventure, offering a wealth of amenities across her seven decks, all serviced by an elevator. The yacht’s expansive storage allows for a variety of water toys and gear, including tenders, personal watercraft, kayaks, and diving equipment. For those seeking nightlife, the upper-deck lounge and bar can transform into a private club, complete with a lit dance floor and state-of-the-art sound system. Guests can unwind in the cinema or indulge in soothing treatments at the spa, which features a massage room, beauty room, steam room, and plunge pool. The sundeck is a highlight, featuring a pool with contraflow jets, a hot tub, and ample sunbeds, all conveniently located near a bar and dining area for al fresco meals.

Crew and Service

Pelorus is equipped to provide exceptional service, with accommodations for up to 46 crew members, including space for five personal staff. This strong crew-to-guest ratio ensures that every need is met, allowing guests to fully enjoy their time aboard without concern.

A Legacy of Luxury

Well-maintained and consistently updated through various refits, Pelorus has retained her status as one of the most expensive megayachts in the world, even a decade after her launch. With a DNV special survey scheduled for April, she is currently listed at an asking price of €160 million (approximately $167.7 million). The yacht is represented by a joint central agency of Burgess, Merle Wood & Associates, and SuperYachtsMonaco, ensuring that potential buyers receive expert guidance throughout the purchasing process.
