Miguel and his pooch Dante are making sure we remember them almost ten years after Coco premiered. On March 20, Disney CEO Bob Iger shared with the most eager Disney musical fans, their shareholders watching on a livestream, that Coco will get a sequel in 2029. Why couldn’t this have been a D23 announcement with a banda performing a song for the crowd like last year’s ride announcement? Or if they didn’t want to reinvent the wheel, at the very least, have Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez be there. It won two Oscars, we need a little more commotion. “While the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart, and adventure,” Iger teased. As for the behind-the-scenes workings of the movie, Lee Unkrich returns to direct the sequel alongside the original screenwriter Adrian Molina. Inside Out 2’s Mark Nielsen is producing. There’s no word yet on who will be writing the script or the songs for the movie.

The original film followed Miguel, a musician born into a family that banned music for generations, as he entered the Land of the Dead on Dia de Los Muertos to undercover family secrets. He eventually had to find his way back to the land of the living before it was too late. Meanwhile, if you’re itching for more Coco, Disney California Adventure announced a Coco-themed ride— oh wait, that also won’t be ready for another couple of years.
