Aqua Lares: The Transformation of Legend into an Ultra-Luxe Expedition Yacht

The world of luxury cruising is set to welcome a new player with the transformation of the 77.4-metre explorer yacht Legend into Aqua Lares. This ambitious project, spearheaded by Aqua Expeditions, part of the Ponant Explorations Group, marks a significant milestone in the realm of ultra-luxury expedition travel. As the sixth vessel in Aqua Expeditions’ ocean-cruising portfolio, Aqua Lares will be the first "ultra-luxe expedition yacht" available for cabin bookings in the stunning Seychelles, while still offering options for private charter.

A Superyacht Experience

Aqua Lares promises to deliver an unparalleled experience for up to 30 guests, featuring a remarkable 1:1 crew-to-guest ratio. This ensures personalized service that caters to every whim and desire. Guests can indulge in cuisine crafted by world-renowned chefs, all while embarking on expert-led excursions in intimate small groups. With a volume of 2,400 GT, the yacht boasts cabins ranging from 13 to 66 square meters, including three spacious owner’s suites designed for ultimate comfort.

Crew and Expertise

The onboard experience is further enhanced by a dedicated crew of 32, which includes three naturalist guides. These experts will provide invaluable insights into the unique ecosystems and cultures encountered during the voyages, enriching the overall journey for guests.

A Design to Inspire

The interior refit of Aqua Lares is being led by Aqua Expeditions’ design director, Birgit Galli Zugaro, in collaboration with the Milan-based studio Hot Lab. Originally a Soviet icebreaker, Legend underwent a significant rebuild in 2016 by Dutch yard Icon Yachts, transforming her into a luxury explorer yacht. The refreshed social spaces include a panoramic sundeck with a bar and lounge, a cinema, boutique, gym, saloon, indoor dining room, and a shaded outdoor dining area, all designed to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Wellness at Sea

Wellness is a cornerstone of the Aqua Expeditions philosophy, and Aqua Lares is no exception. The yacht will feature two Jacuzzis, a sauna, a massage room, and a spa, allowing guests to unwind and rejuvenate after a day of exploration.

Adventure Awaits

For the adventurous spirit, Aqua Lares will carry five private tenders—three 6.5-metre Zodiacs and two 8.5-metre Rafnar Tenders—providing flexibility for off-ship exploration. Additionally, the yacht will be outfitted with paddle boards, kayaks, mountain bikes, and snorkeling and diving gear, ensuring that guests can fully immerse themselves in the natural beauty of their surroundings.

Itineraries of Discovery

Aqua Lares will offer a variety of itineraries, including five-, nine-, ten-, and eleven-night voyages through the breathtaking landscapes of the Seychelles, Tanzania, the Aldabra Atoll, and Zanzibar. The five-night itinerary will explore the inner islands of the Seychelles, such as Praslin and La Digue. In contrast, the eleven-night journey will provide a more diverse array of experiences, from swimming in the Astove Wall—often referred to as an "underwater Grand Canyon"—to delving into the rich Swahili-Arabian heritage of islands like Pemba.

The official launch of Aqua Lares is scheduled for 2026, with rates starting at $9,000 per person for a five-night itinerary based on double occupancy. For those seeking exclusivity, private charters begin at $385,000 for five nights.
