Discovering Cabü by the Sea: A Family-Friendly Retreat on the Kent Coast
Nestled on the easterly coast of Kent, Cabü by the Sea offers a unique blend of natural beauty and modern comfort. Set against a backdrop of wild grasslands and sweeping seaside views, this charming getaway embraces a simplistic attitude to holidaying, making it an ideal destination for families seeking a refreshing staycation.
Accommodation
At the heart of Cabü by the Sea is a collection of luxury cabins, thoughtfully scattered across a picturesque coastal meadow. Each cabin is designed to provide a cozy retreat, perfect for families. During our visit in May, the site showcased its beauty, even though it bore the marks of rabbits and dry weather. The vibrant grasses and wildflowers create a stunning landscape, especially in the warmer months.
The site is car-free, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the tranquil surroundings. Upon arrival, we parked our borrowed Lexus electric SUV at the gravelled car park and wheeled our luggage in a trolley across the gentle bumps and banks to check in. Conveniently, charging points for electric vehicles are available, although with only two on-site, sharing may be necessary.
Our two-bedroom lodge featured a compact kitchenette equipped with everything we needed for our stay, including a roomy fridge and a mini microwave—perfect for families with young children. The cozy lounge, complete with a log burner for cooler evenings, opens onto a spacious deck, ideal for enjoying the sunshine. The cabin also includes a cocktail area and fun wooden games like chess and noughts and crosses.
Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the Scandi-style cabin with natural light, providing a perfect vantage point to watch rabbits frolicking in the morning sun. The main bedroom and living room overlook the communal grounds, while a snug bunk room at the back is perfect for kids. Each cabin boasts a private verandah with barbecue facilities and deckchairs, allowing guests to fully embrace the outdoor experience. For those seeking a touch of luxury, some newer lodges come with private hot tubs.
Facilities
Cabü by the Sea celebrates the joys of communal living, encouraging families to spend quality time together in the fresh sea air. The site is located within an area of special scientific interest, making outdoor activities a must.
The sitooterie, a large industrial-inspired barn, serves as a communal dining and entertainment space. Open on all sides, it allows guests to enjoy indoor-outdoor fun, complete with large open fires for warmth during cooler evenings. The sitooterie features a spacious kitchen equipped with barbecues, pizza ovens, and food preparation areas, along with tabletop fire pits perfect for roasting marshmallows.
Our family enjoyed visiting the sitooterie, where our toddler loved running around and trying out various garden games like ring toss and Jenga. For those who enjoy a bit of competition, there’s also a table tennis setup.
On-site facilities include a charming café and bar with a beachy vibe, serving coffee by day and drinks by night. A convenience store caters to all your needs, while a boutique offers chic swimwear and souvenirs.
The swimming pool, open from March to October, was a highlight of our stay. I relaxed on a cabana with the baby while my husband and toddler splashed in the water. After the kids were tucked in for the night, I indulged in some adult time at the Instagram-worthy nature spa. Guests receive a complimentary hour-long session to enjoy the Scandinavian-style sauna and two wooden hot tubs, with additional slots available for booking. A treatment room set in a shepherd’s hut offers further relaxation options.
For those seeking adventure, bikes and go-karts are available for hire, perfect for exploring the nearby promenade and sandbanks. The pebbly beach, just beyond the sea wall, is a fantastic spot for family fun, whether playing catch or splashing in the waves. Dog owners will also appreciate the dog-friendly cabins available for their four-legged companions.
Location
Cabü by the Sea is located in St Mary’s Bay, just outside Dymchurch, a bustling town filled with pubs, shops, and attractions. The beach offers endless opportunities for family fun, but there’s much more to explore in the surrounding area.
We were fortunate to have the Lexus RZ 450e for our journey, which provided a smooth ride to and around Kent. The spacious interior comfortably accommodated our family and luggage, while the high-quality finish and easy-to-use technology made our travels enjoyable. The wireless charging plate in the central console was particularly handy for capturing all our memorable moments.
A visit to nearby Port Lympne Safari Park was a highlight of our trip. The park is beautifully designed, with animal enclosures nestled within lush greenery. Our toddler was thrilled to see the animals, especially the spectacled bears and the majestic giraffes, making for a delightful family day out.
