A Journey of Resilience

In the wake of a devastating double earthquake that struck La Guaira, countless families found themselves living in makeshift shelters and temporary camps. Amid the chaos of relief efforts, a unique initiative emerged, blending essential supplies with moments of joy and creativity. Zona de Descarga, a cultural organization born in Petare, has brought its emblematic programs—Cine Platabanda and Cuentos para Soñar—to the children of Central Coast, ensuring that amidst adversity, the spirit of childhood can flourish.

The Birth of an Initiative

Founded during the pandemic, Zona de Descarga has evolved into a vibrant platform for urban cultural action, focusing on education, environmental preservation, and social culture. Co-founder Jimmy Pérez reflects on the organization’s origins, noting how it adapted to the challenges of confinement by bringing art and education to unconventional spaces like the flat roofs of homes, known as platabandas in Caracas.

A Response to Immediate Needs

Following the earthquake, Zona de Descarga quickly set up a relief center at Centro Comercial Líder in collaboration with various organizations and volunteers. In the first 96 hours, they provided immediate assistance to over 223 families in improvised shelters, focusing on delivering vital resources such as water, food, and medical supplies. Yet, as Pérez observed, families expressed a deeper longing—not just for material aid, but for spaces that foster emotional healing and community connection.

Bringing Cinema to Life

Recognizing this need, the organization transitioned from immediate relief efforts to a more structured and emotionally supportive approach. The Cine Platabanda initiative began with afternoon activities led by recreation specialists and psychopedagogues, followed by outdoor film screenings. Collaborating with local cinema circuits, the program aimed to provide uplifting experiences for the children. Instead of full-length features, short films were screened, focusing on themes of friendship and resilience, exemplified by a short related to the animated film Zootopia.

In one memorable session at Playa Vasito, the team distributed hygiene kits along with medical supplies and food, culminating in a creative workshop where children illustrated their visions for the future of La Guaira. Their artwork was later featured in a celebratory film screening, reinforcing the theme of participation and community engagement.

Stories That Heal

The second program, Cuentos para Soñar, showcases the power of storytelling as a means of fostering reading and creativity. Initially launched via WhatsApp during the pandemic, this initiative began by sharing tales from national authors and stories written by local children. As the catalog grew to over 125 narratives, the program adapted to the needs of families residing in transitional camps, such as the Licenciado Aranda High School in Pariata.

During interactive sessions, children create their own stories and characters, culminating in a narrative performance supported by visual projections. This not only encourages artistic expression but also builds a sense of community among the participants, providing them with a nourishing environment that prioritizes emotional well-being.

Community-Driven Sustainability

Zona de Descarga operates without institutional funding, relying instead on a network of volunteers, educators, and local support. Pérez emphasizes transparency in their operations, ensuring that all resources are accounted for and distributed effectively. To sustain their initiatives, they launched a fundraising campaign called “Compra tu Catalina y compra tu café,” promoting local coffee and artisanal goods to finance logistics and materials needed for their programs.

As the community continues to recover, the demand for emotional support and companionship remains strong. Families appreciate the tangible aid but yearn for connection and presence, underscoring the profound impact of initiatives like those from Zona de Descarga. Through cinema and stories, children are not only entertained but are given a platform to heal and dream anew.
