Ghanaian Supreme Court Reform Proposal Aims to Limit Political Influence

In a significant move to enhance judicial independence, Ghanaian legal scholar Duncan Amoah has proposed a cap on the number of Supreme Court justices, a reform aimed at curbing political appointments. This suggestion surfaced on August 30, 2026, amid ongoing debates about the politicization of the judiciary in Ghana.

The proposal comes in the wake of a series of controversial appointments that have raised questions about the impartiality of the Supreme Court. Currently, the court comprises 15 justices, with appointments largely influenced by the ruling government. Amoah’s reform seeks to limit the number of justices to 12, a change that he argues would reduce political maneuvering and enhance the court’s credibility.

This development is particularly timely as the country approaches general elections in 2028, where judicial impartiality could play a crucial role in maintaining public trust in the electoral process. The proposal has garnered attention from both local and international observers, who view it as a potential watershed moment for Ghana’s democracy.

Looking ahead, if the proposal gains traction, it could initiate a broader discussion on judicial reforms across West Africa. The Ghanaian Parliament, which has the authority to amend the constitution, may soon be called to consider this proposal, with implications for legislative authority and the balance of power within the government.
