Ocean Race Europe Leg 1: A Dramatic Start and Thrilling Overtakes

The Ocean Race Europe Leg 1 has unfolded with a mix of excitement and unexpected twists, captivating sailing enthusiasts around the globe. From a shocking collision at the start to a dramatic overtake by Team Malizia, the race has been nothing short of exhilarating. Here’s a detailed recap of the key moments from this thrilling leg.

Collision at the Start

The race commenced with a bang—literally. Within moments of the starting gun, a collision occurred between Holcim PRB and Allagrande MAPEI Racing, sending both teams back to Kiel for urgent repairs. Fortunately, both crews emerged unscathed, but the damage to their vessels was significant. Allagrande MAPEI faced a torn J0 headsail and extensive rigging issues, requiring a complete overhaul of their equipment.

Skipper Ambrogio Beccaria of Allagrande MAPEI described the experience as an "emotional rollercoaster," transitioning from uncertainty to the hope of rejoining the race. Both teams have filed official protests against each other, with hearings scheduled for the Cartagena stopover following Leg 2.

Biotherm Takes the Lead

Despite the chaos at the start, Paul Meilhat’s Team Biotherm quickly established dominance, leading the fleet into Portsmouth on August 14. The team maintained their lead from the outset, showcasing exceptional skill in navigating the challenging coastal waters. Biotherm’s trimmer, Amélie Grassi, noted the demanding conditions, stating, “With the coastline so close, heavy traffic, small buoys, and unstable winds, we got very little rest.”

As the fleet entered the North Sea, the predicted light air conditions shifted, allowing Biotherm to capitalize on their strong performance. With Holcim PRB and Allagrande MAPEI out of commission, Biotherm easily maintained its lead, enjoying favorable winds that propelled them forward.

Team Malizia’s Tactical Overtake

In a thrilling turn of events, Team Malizia executed a bold tactical maneuver to snatch second place from Paprec Arkéa. As the fleet approached Dover, Malizia made the risky decision to hug the coastline, escaping the adverse current while Paprec Arkéa struggled in the mid-channel route. This gamble paid off, allowing Malizia to close the gap significantly.

Co-skipper Cole Brauer remarked, “They’re only doing 1.9 knots and we are doing 8.2. This is when we become the hunters.” The chase culminated in a dramatic gybe that allowed Malizia to overtake Paprec Arkéa, marking the only overtaking maneuver of the leg.

The Final Stretch in the English Channel

As the race progressed into the English Channel, the narrow lanes demanded careful navigation. With the route squeezing down to just 3.3 miles at its tightest, crews faced the challenge of maneuvering around shipping traffic while maintaining speed. Each tactical decision became crucial, with Biotherm’s Meilhat predicting, “We won’t have more than half an hour without a maneuver until the end of the race.”

A sudden squall tested the crews’ skills, forcing Biotherm to drop and rehoist their sails in a race against the elements. Meilhat described the experience: “We went from five knots suddenly to 25 knots, then it spun around in circles.”

Race Management and the Finish Line

In a surprising move, race management extended the course by 60 nautical miles, adding a two-lap loop just off Bembridge Ledge. Despite this twist, Biotherm remained unfazed, finishing with maximum points. Meanwhile, the battle for second place intensified as Malizia and Paprec Arkéa engaged in a match race, with Malizia ultimately claiming the position.

The finish line saw Biotherm crossing first, followed closely by Malizia and Paprec Arkéa, who fought valiantly until the end. The race showcased not only the skill of the sailors but also the unpredictable nature of ocean racing.

Looking Ahead: Leg 2

The Ocean Race Europe Leg 2 is set to kick off on August 17, with the fleet heading out of Portsmouth for a grueling 1,400 nautical mile journey to Cartagena, Spain. After intensive repairs, Allagrande MAPEI is ready to rejoin the fleet, while Holcim PRB hopes to complete their repairs in time.

As the excitement builds for the next leg, fans and participants alike are left eagerly anticipating what lies ahead in this thrilling competition. The Ocean Race Europe continues to deliver unforgettable moments, showcasing the resilience and determination of its teams.
